Birds of Florida

Florida is a bird watcher's paradise.  Warm climate, varied habitats, and a location along bird migration routes, makes Florida a great place to see many different species of birds.  More than 470 species of birds can be found in the state.  The Florida Ornithological Society website has a checklist of Florida birds that you can print.  They also have an extensive collection of pictures of Florida birds.

For people lucky enough to live in the state of Florida, you can see some of these birds right in your own backyard.  The Florida Wildlife Extension web site offers information on how to landscape your yard for birds and other wildlife.  They also sponsor the Florida public bird monitoring program, where you can collect and contribute data about the birds that visit your backyard.

The Great Florida Birding Trail is made up of 466 sites throughout Florida which have been selected for their excellent bird watching  and bird education opportunities.

For people who take their bird watching seriously, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission sponsors the Wings Over Florida program, providing certificates for birders who reach various levels of achievement.

Help provide bird habitat on your own property - plant shrubs and small trees that provide food and shelter.  Options that will add beauty to your yard and attract birds include Fringe Tree, Holly, Serviceberry, Viburnum, Bayberry, and Beautyberry.
